Collateral damage

So I’m outside, barefoot with my little boy. You know the one who’s now survived my “mothering” for 3 years. (As opposed to any other children?) And he’s barefoot too, but he’s picking up big rocks. I say, ‘Seth. Stop picking up those big heavy rocks. You don’t have shoes on and you’re going to drop the rock and hurt your foot.”
He did drop the rock. But he didn’t drop it on HIS foot. He dropped it on MINE.
OUCH!
I was talking to my mother-in-law on the phone at the time and when the rock landed on my foot. I said in a very irritated tone, “Ouch! Dammit Seth. I TOLD YOU TO LEAVE THE FUCKING ROCK ALONE!”
In that instant, I think all of those things that she says about how good of a mother I am pretty much vanished from her brain. She’ll probably never think them of me again. And she might be alittle scared of me now too.
So I’m awaiting a visit from the Department of Child and Family Services to see if they want to take my child away. If they do? It’s not all bad. I could really use the rest.
