Soccer, Slushies and Seth
May I present the latest photos of a little boy who so badly wants to be a Big Kid that he can taste it? (Hmmm. Tastes like chicken!)
Seth started playing soccer this fall. Actually, “playing soccer” is a bit of a stretch. He goes to practices all suited up only to spend 5 minutes listening, 30 minutes running after his team mates and the rest of the time playing in the dirt. Its quite fun to watch — especially when you can sit back in your lawn chair and laugh with the other moms.
The games are just as much fun. But at this age, it should be called, “cluster ball” as all of the kids cluster together while chasing the ball.
During the first game, Seth would run a few steps, lose interest and start talking to the other team’s goalie or a fellow teammates with waning attention spans. But the past few games he’s been running with the herd. Actually? He’s usually about seven steps behind the herd. But still, we consider this a small personal victory.
Last week we bribed him. If he kicked the ball three times (during the game) he’d get a Matchbox car. It di
dn’t matter if it was a kick in the wrong direction. We just wanted him to make some contact with the ball. The bribe proved to be a big motivator. After his first kick, he ran to the sidelines where we were sitting to make sure we saw him. Then he regaled his coach, teammates and anyone who’d listen about his kick.
At one point he was standing by his team’s goalie gabbing with one of his teammates. He ended up blocking the other team’s kick. He had no idea the ball was even in his area until it hit him in back of the leg. Then he argued that should count toward his reward. In the end, he made his kick quota and is now the proud owner of a new blue Dodge Charger Matchbox car.
Right now soccer is all about running around with new friends, acting silly and eating yummy slushies afterward — just the way things should be at this age — fun.

Drew shows no interest in soccer. While it may be good for him, I haven’t pushed it because I’m lazy and don’t want to make the time commitment. Isn’t that awful?

I love the shorts that cover the knees - that has to be the cutest soccer look ever.
My husband has coached soccer for years and is 2 favorite stories are one time a kid dropped a quarter out of his pocket during a game and all the players from both teams got on their hands and knees looking for it and another one where all the players started chasing after a pack of butterflies. Those moments are priceless - like him accidentally blocking the kick!

He is so cute in his soccer uniform!!! And don’t worry, the difference in year to year (ability-wise) is night and day. We are still having fun and keeping it real over here with the almost 8 year-old!!!

I love, love, love K-league soccer… the kids have fun and the parents are relaxed… we stopped playing once we moved into the U-10 division as the competition (and the parents) get fierce!
Seth looks so cute in his uniform… tell him, congratulations! on the 3 kicks!

The dads in our soccer league are insane. The moms sit around and laugh at the kids AND the dads. It is hillarious.

Cluster Ball … that’s perfect. My five year old “played” soccer alot like yours this summer. It was all about the snacks afterwards though.

That’s too funny. My nephew (who’s now 6, OMG!) has been playing soccer for awhile now and we’ve gone to a few of his games. When he was in the 3-4 YO league, there was one girl on his team who kept trying to take her shorts off. We don’t know why. I think she wanted to show her friends the pretty patterns on her big girl undies. I wanted to tell my nephew to stay away from that one. But it was intensely funny.

I played recreational soccer for years. It is a great sport. I’m sure that Seth will have loads of fun. And, gosh, he looks cute in that little soccer outfit!

I’m with you girl. Those matchbox cars are most excellent for the bribes.
And by the way, for some reason, when I picture you and the other moms sitting in your lawn chairs watching the game, I keep thinking that you should all have beers.

SUCH fun! We live above a huge soccer complex and allll my 2-year-old can talk about is when she’s a big girl and can play. :0)

Kids are so much fun to watch play at that age.
Just recently Munchkin’s team played against my cousin. There I was sitting on the sideline cheering and talking with the parents about how much the kids have improved. On the other side was my uncle drawing strategies in the dirt for my cousin. The kid is six and I imagine the only thing going through his head while he watched that was “I wonder if he will let me play in the dirt.”
My sister and I thought it was hilarious.
