Shouldn’t I get a trophy for this?

A few days ago, while tucking “the boy” in for the night, I was bestowed a precious gift.

“Mom?” Seth said in a most serious tone. “You’re my VERY BEST lady.”

I mustered up an equally somber voice and replied, “Thanks sweets. I love you too. Good night.”

Then I ran downstairs and laughed until my sides hurt.

By that statement alone, one may choose to surmise that my son is destined for a career as a pimp. And someday he may have a whole stable of “ladies.” Perhaps, that’s how he’ll “sell” them.

“This one here? She’s my BEST lady!”

No. I don’t think that’s the case. (At least I HOPE not!) While he may worship his daddy, at the end of the day? Its mommy who’s still the person he looks to for love, comfort and snuggles. This fact alone warms my heart. Truth be told, it strokes my ego.

I know that in a few years some young lass will steal his heart and usurped my prestigious position. So for now I relish those hugs, smiles, kisses and compliments. For now he’s still “my sweet little bunny.” I know that someday I will have to “let go”. But I often wonder aloud: How exactly am I going to do that?

I have no advice on how to reconcile yourself to eventually letting go (baby steps) BUT I do know that if I were you, I would print VERY BEST LADY on a t-shirt and wear it out.

Oh yes, wear a t-shirt that says that especially when he’s ten-years-old and the girls are hovering like bees on honey. Wear. That. Shirt.

You may have better luck than me!

Enjoy those hugs, that’s wonderful that you’re so close :)

    i always get suspicious when P says “you’re my best mummy” . . .

I don’t know about that. Not that anyone wants their son to grow up to be a mama’s boy, but they say his heart for his mother never fades.

Super sweet story! Nothing compares to the compliments of our children!

Aw, he’s sweet. You? Cynical methinks. Heh.

Oh this post hit home! I wonder how I am going to let you go and handle her growing into an adult all the time! I want to hold her close and keep her teh way she is forever!

I think there is a reason teenagers can be so disagreeable and hard to live with…it makes “letting go” a little easier.

My daughter always asks me to marry her because she wants to live with me forever. Misplaced, but very sweet.

    “Pimp Seth”…. lmao

My brothers are well into their thirties, and they still dote on my mother. I think it’s one of the reasons their wives agreed to marry them. A man who loves and respects his mother dearly is a precious commodity. Lately, when Ben has been under the weather, or when he falls and goes boom, he’s been determined to get his cuddles from Mommy and not Daddy. I’ve been relishing it because I know it won’t last forever. At least Seth didn’t say that you’re his best ho.

The ‘tweed’ thing, does that happen to all kids and is that why my two year old is an intolerable monster? I will definitely relocate to a colder climate if she’s going to act like this all summer.

I thought that was sweet. His best lady. Even if he was a pimp, at least he referred to you as “his best”. that’s gotta count for something.

Isn’t it wonderful to be the mom of a little boy? They love us so darn much it hurts.

You are the very best lady in his life, and I think you always will be. Boys love their mommas no matter what.

    Mommy of the year 2007!

You should read Blog Antagonist’s post called Leaving Me. www.blogantagonist.com, I think, and it’s still on the main page. It’s about her oldest son having a new girlfriend. Gives a hint at what’s ahead of us mothers of sons.

And I’m with Dana. Make that a t-shirt!

  18. Jacquie on May 30th, 2007 9:51 pm

    Oh that is so sweet!

How do we ever let go of our kids? I will ask myself until I figure it out. I guess we do what we must when the time comes?

T-shirt idea ROCKS! Seriously consider that one.

Heheheh…that little guy of yours is something else :)
If you figure out how to let go, let me know. The thought breaks my heart.

I pity the girl who comes a callin’….
As she has some pretty big lady shoes to fill…

  21. Mommy off the Record on May 31st, 2007 9:57 pm

I wonder that all the time too. Is it weird that I’m already jealous of my son’s future wife??! I want to be his best lady forever! LOL
