Beach blanket no-go

The masterminds behind the Parent Bloggers Network (oh and my super awesome bosses, since I help them with some of their campaigns) have asked a burning question regarding your swimwear. What do YOU wear when you go to the pool or beach?
The answer (for me) is… I try to avoid both places as much as possible. I have body angst to begin with. The mere thought of the beach or pool? Makes me all twitchy. I usually try to avoid either place for as long as possible. But by July, “the boy” has worn me down from the constant pleading, so I relent and buy a damn suit already. The plus is that by then, lots of suits are on clearance. The downside? I have to go out in public wearing a swim suit. (The “bikini days” packed their shit and headed out of dodge once I became pregnant. So I do the one piece or tankini type of swimwear and try to avoid pools or beaches as much as possible.)
What I WISH were more en vogue are THESE. But I know that wearing “wholesome swimwear” would garner me even MORE weird looks and really, the last thing I want while I’m wearing a swimsuit is MORE negative attention. But I was poking around on some sites and you know what is really, really supercute? THIS top. Am thinking of pairing the top with something like THIS.
Its not just a cellulite issue. Its an issue of a skin condition I’ve had most of my life. It was supposed to get better as I age but no dice. That weirds me out far more than the cottage cheese texture of my thighs. (But the upside is that if you and I were in a plane crash in the mountains and you get hungry? Not to be all morbid, but if I were dead, you’ll be able to eat for weeks off of my butt cheeks alone! That’s um, a… good thing…. Right?)
Oh and P.S. I don’t care about anyone else’s thighs or cellulite so if you want to wear that bikini? More power to you!
This little question was answered as part of a sweepstakes sponsored by BOCA for the Parent Bloggers Network. Oh and on behalf of Boca, check out THIS site.

I so wish I could stand the beach during the day
I am digging that skirt!
Here’s my question:
How come all the models in those ‘wholesome’ bikinis all look like they could be Hooters Girls?
I don’t look like that.
I found a few years back a simple tank suit that’s covered by a meshy “dress”. It attaches at the neckline of the suit and is an A-line shape to just the top of my thighs. I LOVE that suit…but still avoid wearing any bathing suit as much as possible.
That one is getting worn…it’s time to get a new one. I’m loving your suggestions.

I like the top!! Is this why you keep “skirting” my invitation for you all to come over and swim?
I feel ya. I hate trying to find a suit that is relatively inexpensive but can contain these boobs of mine. Of course about the time I feel like a whale in my suit, all I have to do is go to Raging Rivers and I look like a Playboy centerfold compared to a lot of them. I love both the swim shirt and skirt you linked. If only the shirt didn’t go around the neck.
I rock the skirt and am not ashamed. Birth is not pretty to the hips and thighs - girls stand together and unite!
I like both ideas. Specially since I have something similiar…2 piece but by NO MEANS a bikini…LOL…whew…I made myself laugh at the me-in-a-bikini thought…I really do like both the bottom and the top, I think they would look really nice together.
My favorite is a one piece that has built in shorts, that way when I put on a tshirt I have an outfit..
I also go with a discreet skirt due to a skin condition. I think that people think I think I’m fat, but really it is to hide my scarred skin. Thanks for the links!
Ooh, I love those tops…but I need some breastage support or I look like I have my grandmother’s breasts. Wait, I do.
Seriously, swimsuit makers! I need support but not VS super uplifting and out. Make a damn shelf bra, those cups do not work.
I love the skirts, actually. I just think they’re cute. Don’t listen to me, though. I’m old.
I dunno, I was really diggin’ that Amishwear link, especially the gal on the end who looks like she’s sporting a goatee (I’m sure it’s just bad lighting…). I like Alissa’s idea of the mesh A-line “dress” - it sounds like that would let you wear a cute suit but wouldn’t display it quite as prominently (best of both worlds!).
I have a miracle suit that I swear by (although it does not make me look like Cindy Crawford, as planned). And a good cover-up - but I just try not to look at my reflection and have a good time, as long as there are no “forests” coming out, I’m good. TMI? Sorry.
I’m still just avoiding the pool! Actually I’m about to kick it in gear… Mommy Summer Fitness Challenge is about to begin. Of course when it’s over, swimsuit season will be over too…but maybe I’ll be all slick in my winter cords!
I’m all about a tankini top and board shorts on the bottom.
Unless you somehow lose your board shorts and discover this just prior to swim class, in which case you wear regular shorts that weigh about 100 pounds when wet.
Good times….
I like a skirt. I wear one and still feel cute.
I’m a little late to this conversation, but my friends and I tend to dress more conservatively than the average Joe (not Amish!) and another friend forwarded this site to me the other day. Typically, if I’m swimming with my friends and their smaller children, I just wear a swimsuit (I definitely don’t look good in it!) but if I were going to be in a more public place, these aren’t half bad!! http://www.modest-swimwear.net/index.htm
I found your link from Mamalogues and want you to know that I will be praying for you and your family. I cannot imagine having to face cancer. I personally know people who have beaten this awful disease, and I will be praying that you have the best doctors who can help you fight it also. I also believe that if God chose to, he could just heal miraculously. I will be praying for that too.
Praying you are surrounded by love and filled with peace.
